Tare, Gross and Payload: The Three Weights That Matter
Every shipping container is described using three separate weights. Understanding the difference is the key to everything else on this page.
Tare weight: the weight of the empty container on its own, with nothing inside. This is the figure you need for delivery and lifting.
- Maximum gross weight: the heaviest the container is ever allowed to be, including its own tare weight plus everything loaded into it. This is a safety limit set by the manufacturer and certified for shipping.
- Payload (net weight): the maximum weight you can actually load inside. It is simply the maximum gross weight minus the tare weight.
- In plain terms: tare is the box empty, gross is the box at its absolute limit, and payload is what you are allowed to put in it.

The figures below are typical industry averages for standard steel containers. Exact weights vary by manufacturer, age and specification, so always treat these as a guide rather than a guarantee.

- Crane and HIAB delivery: containers are delivered by HIAB lorry, a vehicle with a crane mounted on the back that lifts the unit onto your site. The crane is rated to lift the empty tare weight, so an empty 20ft or 40ft unit is well within range. A pre-loaded or part-converted container is heavier and may need to be assessed in advance.
- Ground-bearing capacity: a container concentrates its weight onto small contact points at each corner. A loaded 20ft unit sitting near its gross limit can exceed 30 tonnes. Soft ground, tarmac in warm weather, or unsupported slabs may not cope, which is why a level, firm and load-bearing base matters.
- Onward transport and craneage: if you ever need to move a loaded container, both the haulage vehicle and any crane must be rated for the combined weight. Knowing your payload keeps you the right side of legal axle limits and lifting safety.
