Container Condition Grades Explained: One-Trip, Cargo-Worthy and Wind & Watertight

When you start shopping for a shipping container, you quickly run into a wall of terminology. One-trip, cargo-worthy, wind and watertight, as-is, Grade A, Grade B. It is not always obvious what these mean or which one you actually need, and the same words are sometimes used differently from one supplier to the next.

This guide decodes the industry terms, explains the grading system we use at Container Sales (UK) Ltd, and helps you match the right condition to your intended use.

What Do Container Condition Grades Mean?

Across the industry, a handful of terms describe the condition and certification of a container. It helps to know them before you buy.

• One-trip (new): a container manufactured overseas and shipped to the UK just once, usually carrying cargo on that single voyage. It arrives in near-new condition with only minor marks, and is the best cosmetic standard available.
• Cargo-worthy (CW): a used container certified as structurally sound and fit to carry cargo by sea. It will show age and wear but meets the standard required for shipping.
• Wind and watertight (WWT): a used container that keeps wind and water out and is sound for storage, but is not certified for shipping. This is the practical baseline for a dry storage unit.
• As-is: a container sold in its current state, which may have known faults. Usually the cheapest option but the least predictable, and not something we would recommend for most buyers.

Container Sales (UK) Ltd Grades Explained

To make buying simpler, we group our stock into four clear grades. Here is exactly what each one means.

New (One-Trip) Grade A: shipped from China with cargo. The odd small blemish, scuff or dent here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. The best cosmetic condition we offer.

New (One-Trip) Grade B: shipped from China with cargo. Several internal and/or external scuffs and larger dents, and possibly outside ISO dimensions. May have had repairs. Still wind and watertight, and some may still be suitable for shipping.

Used Grade A: usually no more than 15 years old and structurally sound. Better cosmetically than a Used Grade B, with surface rust, scuffs, scratches, small dents and ISO-standard repairs. Suitable for storage and can be recertified for shipping where required.

Used Grade B: wind and watertight only, usually 15 to 25 years old. Cosmetically poorer, with original paintwork in poor condition, surface rust, scuffs, larger dents and repairs. Doors may be stiffer, floorboards may be worn and cross members may be bowed. Not suitable for shipping, but a sound choice for storage on a budget.

Special Stock: One-Trip Hi-Cubes, Ex-Factory and Ex-Hire Units

Alongside the standard grades, we often hold particular units that do not fit neatly into a single box but offer excellent value. Availability varies, so it is always worth asking what is in stock.

• 2021-built 40ft one-trip hi-cubes: used once to ship from China to the UK, then used domestically for PPE storage contracts during Covid. Effectively as good as new one-trip condition.
• 2021-built 20ft new containers: shipped empty and never used, so internally they are in ex-factory condition.
• 20ft ex-hire units: originally supplied as 20ft New (One-Trip) Grade A containers to self-storage customers 15 to 20 years ago and kept in a clean domestic environment. Returned to our stock as part-exchange, they are in much better condition than a standard Used Grade A and often come with lock boxes already fitted.

Which Grade Is Right for You?

The best grade is simply the one that matches your use and your budget. As a guide:

• Choose New (One-Trip) Grade A if you want the best cosmetic finish, for a conversion, a customer-facing use, or where appearance matters.
• Choose Used Grade A if you want a sound, presentable unit for storage and possible future shipping, at better value than a new one-trip.
• Choose Used Grade B if you need dependable, wind and watertight storage and appearance is not a priority.
